About Distr
Distr is an open-source software distribution platform for vendors who ship their software into customer-controlled environments. It delivers Docker Compose and Helm applications from one platform, with guided installation, customer entitlements, offline license keys, logs and metrics.
Distr is built by Glasskube, a company backed by Y Combinator and based in Vienna, Austria and Chicago, US. The platform and both deployment controllers are open source under the Apache 2.0 license on GitHub.
Why we built Distr
We started with an open-source package manager for Kubernetes that grew to nearly 3,500 GitHub stars. Soon, startups in our network asked for help getting their applications into large enterprise environments, so we spent a long time writing Helm charts and containerizing applications for them.
We learned quickly that a Helm chart or a Compose file is a great start, but not enough to ship software reliably. The hard part comes after the first install: maintaining, observing, updating and securing every customer environment over time. Solving that is why we built Distr.
What we believe
- Keep it as simple as possible, both for you and your customers.
- A distribution platform should be open source and self-hostable.
- Every enterprise environment is different, so the platform needs to be as flexible as possible.
- Application design matters: architecting for a self-hostable product is half the struggle.
- Standards over lock-in.
